The promise of strength and hopefulness – Pantone’s colours of the year 2021
“Colours, like features, follow the changes of the emotions” mused the iconic artist Pablo Picasso. Nothing it seems could be truer today as the Kassavello team consider Pantone’s selection for ‘Colour of the Year 2021’. This year the colour authority has chosen not one but two colours for the title – only the second time in 22 years that they have chosen to do so. ‘Ultimate Grey’ (Pantone 17-5104) and ‘Illuminating yellow’ (Pantone 13-0647). Following a tumultuous year with a global pandemic Pantone describe the balance of this duo as: ‘A marriage of colour conveying a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting.’
Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Colour Institute goes on to say: ‘The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude. Practical and rock-solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a colour combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted; this is essential to the human spirit.’
The past year has undoubtedly proved that our homes really can have a profound impact on our emotional wellbeing during times of stress and uncertainty with the chosen colour palette playing an integral role within that. As we look towards the promise of hope and happier times ahead the Kassavello team have been considering how Patone’s two chosen colours can be utilised to create a positive impact in any space.
Bold design that amplifies contrasting tones
Bold design can amplify the impact of colour – simultaneously drawing the eye to both palette and graphic form. This is exemplified in our exquisite Redleh rug which pays homage to the Chinese dragon with a striking design symbolising power, strength, nobility and good luck.
Adding a punch of vibrant sunshine to your living space
Used in large amounts yellow can be overstimulating but as the focal point against a neutral backdrop such as ultimate grey it shines out with the promise of warmth, prosperity and better times to come. Our Ibis sofa beautifully fulfils this objective with sumptuous velvet upholstery and tapered legs, inspired by the elegant silhouette of the Ibis bird.
Selecting an ‘ultimate grey’ backdrop to add drama and emotional impact
In order to maximise the impact of bold colours such as ‘illuminating yellow’ in a space ‘ultimate grey’ can be used as a backdrop against statement pieces. Walls, ceilings, floors and even screens can transform the emotional ambience of a room and simultaneously serve to showcase the craftsmanship and detail of key pieces. Here a grey backdrop helps to create a timeless and enduring setting whilst highlighting the exquisite form and sensual lines of the Maya sofa and armchair.
A cocoon of comfort – the ultimate grey pieces
Grey can sometimes be seen as safe and sensible but on the flip side of uniformity is safety. In periods of uncertainty such as a global pandemic, people want to retreat away from the world and a grey cocoon is conceived by many as a place of comfort and calm. Our Nukie bench wraps up the relaxation with a mid-century twist – four contemporary tapering legs and brass detailing on the side elevations take this stool from accessory to a statement piece.
The art of colour
A considered piece of wall art can be used to inspire the design scheme for an entire room and the well thought out incorporation of contrasting colours such as grey and yellow can effectively set the emotional tone for space. We adore this dramatic photographic art of huddled exotic birds which brings together cool greys naturally punctuated with vibrant yellows and blues – a beautiful reminder of the enduring hope and promise of the natural world. Our photography is supplied using either dibond mounting with glicee paper or diasec mounting with Perspex – both striking options to create a true ‘gallery’ ambience and draw in the eye.
