2021 – Renewal, Restoration and Reinvigoration – a reflective guide to new Design Trends

There is no doubt that 2020 has brought some of the greatest changes to our lives, the likes of which haven’t been seen for decades.  The emotional, psychological, cultural, and economic impact of the Coronavirus pandemic has been far-reaching and spanned regions, countries, continents, and almost every corner of the globe.  However, far from wholly negative consequences, energy, creativity, and human resilience have risen tall.  No more so has this been true than within the world of interiors, particularly the way in which professionals and consumers are reimaging design within the home. The close of the year always brings with it a plethora of industry predictions for the forthcoming months but this year the trends and vogues of aesthetic and practical preferences seem to hold an even greater poignancy as people reflect on how important a sanctuary their home really has become.  With that in mind, we have uncovered some of our favorite forecasts for 2021 furniture and interiors with a focus on one of our favorite and truly innovative portfolio brands – Duistt.

Comforting Cocooning and curves

Whilst the outside world whirls with heightened stress and restriction, consumers are seeking to create their own ‘cocoon’ at home.  Furniture with homely comfort, deep seating, and curves.  A virtual hug as you retreat to your personal sanctuary.  Nowhere is this epitomized more than Duistt’s Julius Brass Armchair – a classic club shape with sumptuous velvet upholstery that oozes charm but delivers on comfort.

For a glamorous take on organic curves, the Oscar sofa offers an alluring and sensual focus in any living space. The free-flowing nature of this timeless piece is inspired by the architecture of Oscar Niemeyer who was famed for saying ‘curves make up the entire universe’ – a beautiful antithesis to the harsh boundaries and restrictions we have all faced in recent months.

Inside Outside

Connection to nature and the outside has been a driving force for relaxation and reassurance during periods of lockdown and 2021 will see an increasingly blurred line between the inside and outside areas of the home.  In a literal sense, the move towards biophilic design and the introduction of more plants and greenery will be very noticeable within living spaces and kitchens but in a more abstract sense, shapes and forms traditionally associated with external design will be softened and reimagined for internal use.  We adore the Copacabana bench from Duistt which typifies this trend.  Inspired by the shapes of the Brazilian sidewalk it packs a real design punch with its curved limed oak structure.  A soft sleek cushion can be added or removed as required making it adaptable within multiple spaces.

Also, characterizing shapes typically seen in external lounge furniture is the Ginga armchair.  Solid oak curves and woven leather combine to create an unusual and exquisite piece.  Originally inspired by the swaying movement of the Brazilian martial art, Capoeira, the design emphasizes flowing form and detailing.

Global Influence

Epitomized by earthy color palettes and warm, natural materials, the global influence trend is a reflection of society’s appreciation of the commonalities across nations.  Different cultures, climates, and beliefs are brought together through a shared human spirit of resilience and a connection to the planet that we all call home.  Coffee and side tables are the perfect places to showcase the beauty of natural wood.  Here a composition of three stunning Bossa tables is married in perfect harmony featuring a combination of natural oak, high gloss mahogany, and natural cane. Chamfered edges and solid organic shapes define these beautifully crafted pieces.

Tactile fabrics

Back in the late 1940s, Florence Knoll asked for a chair she could curl up in, the result was the Saarinen’s Womb Chair in Knoll’s Classic Bouclé. Bouclé is textural to the touch with strong associations to style and sophistication making it the perfect fabric of choice for continued popularity in 2021.  Playing on the cocoon trend, textural fabrics will be seen in a variety of applications in the forthcoming months including dining spaces.
