Prior to the outbreak of a global pandemic, back in September 2019, Dulux named tranquil dawn, a hazy pale green, as its colour of the year 2020<\/strong><\/em>.
\n<\/span>The soft hue is said to reflect a growing desire to understand what it is to be human at a time when advances in technology are making us feel increasingly disconnected from each other.\u00a0<\/span>Fast Forward almost a year and that sentiment have, if anything, become even stronger and reinforced since the changes in our lifestyles that the Covid 19<\/strong><\/em> crisis has brought about.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Many global surveys have pointed to the fact that the majority of people don\u2019t wish to return to life as it was pre-pandemic.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They have relished spending increased time with friends and family and the opportunity to reconnect with outdoor natural spaces.\u00a0 <\/span>Soft pastel hues<\/strong><\/em> such as hazy pale green can create an ambience of calming relaxation within a living space<\/strong> <\/em>which exemplifies these natural human desires. <\/span><\/p>\n

Looking to the broader palette of pastel tones<\/strong><\/em>, colours with grey undertones, help to diffuse colour saturation and make these hues seem softer on the eye.\u00a0 <\/span>In lighter versions, these pastels can even act as a neutral foundation for a bolder colour palette that is layered on top.<\/p>\n

As design trends<\/strong><\/em> begin to emerge for 2021 there will be some changes to the way that the pastel palette<\/strong><\/em> is interpreted and applied: \u201cPastels are still hugely popular, but I think we\u2019re gravitating towards pastels with added warmth and earthy undertones.\u00a0 <\/span>For overall colour palettes, we\u2019re using a mix of both spring and autumnal colours<\/strong><\/em>\u201d Young Huh of Young Huh Interior Design. This diversion in tone is already showcased through leading design names and suppliers.\u00a0 <\/span>The Rug Society\u2019s Terrazo rug<\/strong><\/em><\/a> combines dusty pinks and earthy autumnal hues<\/strong><\/em> whilst Caffe Latte\u2019s latest mood board is a hazy mix of cappuccino, corndust<\/em> and taupe.<\/span><\/p>\n

2020 pastel trends aren\u2019t completely focused on colour, there is also an increased emphasis on texture within a pastel colour palette<\/strong><\/em> \u2013 layering up of different textures in the same or very similar colours.\u00a0 <\/span>From flooring to furniture fabrics through to accessories such as cushions, throws and one of 2020\u2019s biggest interior styling moments<\/strong><\/em>, dried flowers.\u00a0 <\/span>Curation is everything when recreating this look \u2013 from boucle to blush-toned leather \u2013 every detail should be considered to determine the perfect mix.<\/p>\n

Curved sculptural furniture is also having a huge resurgence, particularly when it comes to upholstery.\u00a0 <\/span>Curved sofas and high back armchairs provide a glamorous dimension to a gentle chalky colour scheme.\u00a0 <\/span>Organic shapes are calm and restful and build upon the peaceful dynamic of a pastel palette as seen in Koket\u2019s furniture grouping.<\/p>\n

Lighting design has also been influenced by all of the aforementioned dynamics and we are increasingly seeing organic shapes blended beautifully against dusty pinks, delicate lilacs and restful taupes.<\/span><\/p>\n
