Porto – a timeless scheme for a new luxury apartment

Porto, or ‘Oporto’ is the second largest city in Portugal and one of the Iberian Peninsula’s major urban areas. Declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1996 due to its rich history and plethora of outstanding historic buildings and monuments, it went on to be declared the European Culture Capital in 2001 spurning the construction of a new major concert hall space and exponential growth in the arts.  Since that period tourism has grown considerably in the area becoming one of the fastest growing destinations in Europe.  Such growth has led to an associated expansion in construction to meet demand for more residential and commercial spaces.

So, when  Atelier KV were tasked with scoping out a design for furnishing an apartment in arguably one of the prime locations overlooking the Douro River, within the heart of Porto, we couldn’t wait to develop something special.

Porto – located along the Douro River estuary

Our client was seeking an elegant approach to the interior design which would be a chance to develop a distinctive home for their family that stood out against other apartments within the development.

Conceptual design

Focusing on the client’s love of natural materials, soft fabrics and pops of colour, we developed a conceptual mood board that incorporated flowing curves, rich wood finishes and subtle reflection.

A neutral base is brought to life with accents of marine blue and soft green whilst exquisite velvets, cane, brushed brass and ashwood add textural beauty.

Creating flexibility for family life and entertaining

At the heart of the apartment was a beautiful dining space with expansive views to the river.  It would be utilised for day to day family living as well as frequent entertaining.  As such we designed a flexible dining table with the ability to extend the top and accommodate up to 10 people.  Flanked by exquisite cane chairs upholstered in sumptuous velvet and completed with brushed brass tip legs, the dining area would command centre stage in the space.  To add textural interest an elegant and geometric wallpaper was added to the main wall in the room.  The family already had a small storage unit in the form of a family heirloom but to add additional flexible storage, a long length walnut sideboard was designed for placement behind the dining table, with finishes specified to compliment the existing unit.   Ambient artwork and organic accessories add a final layer of colour and detail.

Developing a design led home office

With a small dedicated area for a home office, our design team conceptualised bespoke joinery tailored to the dimensions and practical needs of our clients.  Taking cues from the original concept board, the design features fluted wood, light oak panels and ammonite lacquer.

Practical storage combines with elegant design

Storage was a critical requirement within the property but space was at a premium so all elements needed to be designed with care and elegance in mind.  To cater to the needs of a busy family a practical storage unit was specified for the entrance hall which would allow room for shoe storage whilst retaining aesthetic appeal and finishes which aligned to the other spaces within the apartment.  Calacutta oro marble and light ashwood were given added interest by the incorporation of a timeless chevron design and antique brass handles.

A cosy living space imbued with modern aesthetics

Moving from the dining room into the living area, the open plan design of the property meant that a seamless transition was required to create continuity and a sense of flow.  Picking up on the colours, textures and shapes of the dining space the living room incorporated soft curves, natural walnut finishes and rich patterns.  Bespoke joinery with geometric elements created practical storage and a place to conceal the ever problematic tv!  Glass coffee and side tables enhanced the sense of space whilst allowing the beauty of the hand woven rug to shine through.  A sumptous low sofa and organic armchairs add a dash of panache and supreme comfort for relaxation or simply admiring the views of the historic surroundings.

We loved developing the scheme throughout the property, keeping in mind at all times the concept, our clients’ preferences and the beautiful location of Porto. For further inspiration on our brand portfolio and our bespoke furniture service please take a look at our website and don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have.  We would be delighted to hear from you.
