Just as first impressions count when you enter a room full of people, so do the first impressions count as you enter a house or the entrance to a commercial building.  Colour, texture and symmetry all play a role in setting a scene for how a visitor perceives the space they are entering.  It also sets the tone for expectations for the other rooms and spaces within that property. Even more remarkably, it’s a rate that’s steadily growing by an average of 4% per year. If you add on business trips and staycations, where holidaymakers choose to stay in their own country, it’s not surprising that there is a phenomenal momentum within residential design to emulate the sleek finishes and elegant aesthetic design of five-star hotels. Increasingly, interior designers are being asked by clients to directly replicate a particular hotel suite or to source a piece of furniture that they fell in love with in the lobby or hotel bar. In the early 1900’s F.Stuart Foote, founder of the American Imperial Furniture company in Grand Rapids, Michigan, claimed to have invented the coffee table whilst helping his wife prepare for a party. He simply lowered the legs of an existing dining table to make a centrepiece from which coffee could be served. However, Foote’s claim to this invention is disputed by many and in fact the humble coffee table is likely to have emerged from a much more complex set of historical and social circumstances.
